Brilliant Scientists’ Advice: Take Brain-Altering Drugs

Brilliant Scientists' Advice: Take Brain-Altering DrugsThey might need to come out with a new version of that “This is your brain on drugs” ad if a group of scientists get their way. In a paper titled “Towards Responsible Use of Cognitive-Enhancing Drugs by the Healthy” published in Nature, seven scientists from the US and UK advocate the use of brain-enhancing prescription drugs like Adderall and Ritalin as study and work aids in a manner similar to caffeine. Their Peter Tosh-like solution to “legalize it” aims to make these drugs legal, stopping an illicit trade that, according to the article, is sweeping through college campuses around the world. Can’t Afford College? Move to California!

The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education‘s annual National Report Card on Higher Education came out this week, and EVERY SINGLE STATE in the US earned a resounding “F” when it came to affordability (i.e., how hard it is to pay for college, taking into account tuition, financial aid and family income). Every state, that is, except California, which earned a shining C- due to its unusually low-cost community colleges. Congratulations, you’re slightly below par!

Rise in College Tuition since 1982Particularly telling is the report’s chart (left) of college tuition growth as compared to other major expenses since 1982-84. Not only has it increased by more than four times the rate of the Consumer Price Index during that time, but its pace is more than that of food, housing and transportation COMBINED. Only health care comes relatively close to the meteoric rise in college costs, and even that is just a bit more than half the rate of tuition.

Just eight years ago, 46 states passed the affordability test, meaning that only — no wait, don’t tell me, 7 5 4 states flunked. See what education can do for you?

You may never become the bionic man, but with recent research showing that the brain continues to grow late in life, it’s never too late for an e-boost. (more…)

Obama: The Education President?

Barack Obama Education PresidentSome are already speculating that President-elect Barack Obama might become the elusive “education president,” judging from a pre-election education plan that earned him the endorsements of both the National Education Association (NEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). While it’s too early to tell anything yet, his early choice of advisers gives an indication that education is still on his list of priorities.

Among the group are Christopher Edley, Jr., dean of the law school at UC-Berkeley and a former professor at Harvard Law School, and Janet Napolitano, the current Arizona governor who’s made education a priority in her administration. Even Obama’s newly appointed Chief of Staff, Rep. Rahm Emanuel, this year introduced a bill to boost the option of charter schools, a measure that Obama also supports. (more…)

Obama, McCain Education Plans Compared

You may have already voted – and thank you, if you have. If not, you might be scrambling for information on the candidates in order to help make your last-minute decision. While this isn’t necessarily the best-laid plan (we hope you don’t do that while driving), we’re here to provide some information on how the next president will affect your education. Here is a look at each candidate’s plan for Federal high school and college funding. If you have anything (productive) to add, feel free to add it to the comment section below. (more…)
